FUTURE SOUNDS 32 HAS ARRIVED!

1. LEMON SUN – WANNA HAVE YOU
Coming out growling like THE STONES’ “Bitch”, Los Angeles’ LEMON SUN have just completed a full-length with Dave Schiffman that’s a thrilling ride. A five-piece with dueling guitars and a classic frontman, a la Mick/Robert/Roger. Management: Larry Little. Legal: Michelle Jubelirer. NEEDS: Booking.
LEMON SUN – NEW ALBUM TBD – UNSIGNED

2. THE ETTES – CROWN OF AGE
Los Angeles’ THE ETTES went from unsigned to snapped up since arrival of this amazing CD by Take Root Records, with the North American CD release date on September 9th. Recorded at the famed Toerag Studios, ‘Look At Life Again’ will appeal to any fan of THE KILLS or THE DUKE SPIRIT.
Management: John O’Malley. NEEDS: Booking. Legal.
THE ETTES – LOOK AT LIFE AGAIN SOON – TAKE ROOT RECORDS

3. MAGIC WANDS – BLACK MAGIC
The Nashville duo, MAGIC WANDS, are still performing tricks to gain attention in the homeland, but the Brits are already taken by their strange magic. Booked for Glastonbury and Wireless Festivals, this track’s appeal doesn’t take a crystal ball to figure out.
Management: Simon Bobbett. Booking: Russell Warby/Dave Kaplan. ASCAP.
MAGIC WANDS – DEMOS – UNSIGNED

4. CREATURE – BRIGITTE BARDOT
Mere teenagers from Canada, CREATURE scared up plenty of attention at SXSW and are at work building a monster. ‘Brigitte Bardot’ goes from TOM TOM CLUB to NEW YOUNG PONY CLUB to flashes of SLY & THE FAMILY STONE. A party track with more curves than Brigitte Bardot.
Management: Gourmet Délice, Bonsound. NEEDS:
CREATURE – DEMOS – UNSIGNED

5. THE BLOOMS – WHITE WALLS
Some of the most exciting new music springs up from the strangest places, case in point with THE BLOOMS from Tulsa, Oklahoma. You’d swear they channel directly from Freddie and Brian with this QUEEN-tastic track. Legal: Dave & Steve Bird. BMI. NEEDS: Management, booking.
THE BLOOMS – DEMOS – UNSIGNED

6. CHRISTOPHER DENNY – TIME
Step back into time, our music icons all possessed undeniable talent, whether it was Ray Charles or Johnny Cash. No hiding behind fashion or pro tools. CHRISTOPHER DENNY and his band, the OLD SOLES, are as Arkansas as Arkansas can be & Denny contains a voice that comes along once in 30 years, and could be the long-lost love child of Patsy Cline & Roy Orbison.
Booking: Jonathan Adelman, Paradigm. Legal: Reed Hunter.
CHRISTOPHER DENNY & THE OLD SOLES – AGE OLD HUNGER – 2:59 RECORDS

7. MY PET SADDLE – IL FAIT BEAU
Sounding like DYLAN’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ era, Fullerton, California’s MY PET SADDLE provide us with a full-on jamboree in ‘Ill Fait Beau’. Live they are reckless drivers, swerving and falling all over the place in true bohemian glory, minus the patchouli but plenty of funk.
NEEDS: Management, legal, booking. No PRO.
MY PET SADDLE – EP – UNSIGNED

8. PORT O’BRIEN – I WOKE UP TODAY
Oakland’s PORT O’BRIEN maybe sitting by the dock in the Bay area, but their ship has already launched in the UK/Europe (City Slang) and in Australia/NZ (Dew Process). They’ve toured with Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, Rogue Wave, and Nada Surf, and need a deal at home. They have the fire and conviction of THE ARCADE FIRE, and are confirmed for the Monolith Festival. Manager: Chrisian Stavros/Bryna Gootkind. Booking: Jackie Nalpant, Paradigm. Rob Challice, CODA, UK. Legal: Brian McPhereson. BMI
PORT O’BRIEN – ALL WE COULD DO WAS SING – UNSIGNED IN US

9. THE YELLING – BLOOD ON THE STEPS
Turn this one up to piss off your parents. Los Angeles act, THE YELLING are new on the scene but quickly getting interest. The banshee like vocals from Nathanal Cox recall ROBERT PLANT, and the guitar work of Robert Davis is one stop off from commanding. This band screams ENORMOUS potential.
Manager: Mike Soens. NEEDS: Booking.
THE YELLING – DEMOS – UNSIGNED

10. THE MUSLIMS – BRIGHT SIDE
San Diego’s THE MUSLIMS bring that kind of garage rock sound that we generally reserve for THE STROKES to the party. Every track on this self-released disc could’ve been selected to make the playlist this month, and this one should bare warning that another Casablancas sounding frontman could have a hit with a song about a “Brightside”.
THE MUSLIMS – THE MUSLIMS – UNSIGNED

11. THE MORNING BENDERS – WAITING FOR A WAR
They say nice guys finish last, but the exception comes from Oakland’s THE MORNING BENDERS are off to a quick and fortunate start, doing the full NA tour with THE KOOKS and signing to +1 Music. Compared often to THE SHINS and THE LITTLE ONES, live it’s all about the charm of frontman Chris Chu.
Management: Jonny Kaps/Simon Bentley. Booking: Heather Kolker, Paradigm.

THE MORNING BENDERS – TALKING THROUGH A TIN CAN - +1 RECORDS

12. THE BOTTICELLIS – THE REVIEWER
THE BOTTICELLIS are the surf/pop wing of the SEA IN THE SAND collective, which also includes the Raga-Psych project Cotillion and folk duo Kuma/Koshka. One part San Francisco hippie, one part pure power pop, fans of BIG STAR should review the debut LP, Old Home Movies. Highly recommended. Booking: Chris Faville, Mongrel. Legal: Paul Sommerstein. SEASAC. NEEDS: Management.
THE BOTTICELLIS – OLD HOME MOVIES – ANTENNA FARM RECORDS

13. THE ROSEWOOD THIEVES – SILVER GUN
New York’s THE ROSEWOOD THIEVES made their first strike on TVT Records, but now have dusted off and moved on without a label with a string of new songs that will steal your hearts. ‘Silver Gun’ has a JOHN LENNON familiarity to it and they back it up with a captivating live show worth catching.
Legal: Ted Harris. BMI. NEEDS: Booking, management
THE ROSEWOOD THIEVES – NEW SONGS – UNSIGNED

14. THE MUMLERS – SHAKE THAT MEDICATION
Nope, this track isn’t a JIMMY SMITH track or from 1964, it’s live and alive in 2008 by a 19-year-old white kid from San Jose named Will Sprout. Part New Orleans groove, part STAX, THE MUMLERS blend BOOKER T with LITTLE BARRIE. Again, great music bubbles up from unique places.
Legal: A-Train Entertainment. BMI. NEEDS: Booking, management.
THE MUMLERS – THICKETS & STICHES GALAXIA RECORDS

15. SOCIETY OF ROCKETS – TIME
SOCIETY OF ROCKETS, the San Francisco psychedelic band closes out the disc with a page out of the AL GREEN’s songbook with ‘Time’. Releasing “Our Paths Related” on vinyl on their own vanity label, the album includes everything from way-out guitars to groovy horns. This track was made for a sunny Sunday afternoon, a Frisbee and some BBQ.
ASCAP. NEEDS: Management, booking.
SOCIETY OF ROCKETS – OUR PATHS RELATED – UNDERPOP RECORDS.

THE MOST GORGEOUS SONG OF THE YEAR: FLEET FOXESOLIVER JAMES

OTHER ARTISTS TO WATCH:

BLONDE ACID CULT – Track: KICK THE FUNK
The cult started in New York City that have taken the Manchester-STONE ROSES and made it their own “Madhatten” sound. One of the strongest demo cd’s I’ve been sent in some time, I’m drinking the cool-aide. Unsigned

GERONIMO – Track: JUST LIKE WATER
Indie rock this good from Saskatchewan, Canada? Since discovering them at SXSW, this one’s been in constant rotation. Unsigned

ELECTRIC TOUCH – Track: DON’T BE AFRAID
Young band from Austin, Texas wrangles up a singer from the UK and sounds like THE LIBERTINES with hits. Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. Justice Records

MONTE NEGRO – Track: ME DEUELE NO ESTAR JUNTO A TI
Los Angeles via Mexico, seeing them was like witnessing a band in Felini's 'La Dolce Vita', or the international-ness of Duran Duran's 'Rio'. Epic Records

BIRDS & BATTERIES – Track: AFTER THE FLOOD
A five piece that reminds me of classic THE BAND. This is an album so gorgeous I find myself playing it over and over again because it lulls you into magic. Unsigned

GRAVEYARD – Track: LOST IN CONFUSION
Sweden's WOLFMOTHER, just close your eyes and it's ZEPPELIN - a voice from another time. TeePee Records

THE GRIZZLY OWLS – Track: WHAT’S A GIRL TO DO?
From Bakersfield, CA, THE GRIZZLY OWLS are the husband and wife team of Jenny and Joseph Andreotti that have self-released the disc, 'By Night On My Bed' that is a pure delight. Unsigned

HONEY CLAWS – Track: SHOUT OUT
This collective from Austin, Texas take the hipster-hop of COOL KIDS and drop 808-style bombs. One moment indie, the next electronic rock, but hip hop through and through. Unsigned

LEMON SUN: A BAND SO GOOD, IT MAKES YOU SMASH YOUR CAR

In case you missed the smokin' hot set that LEMON SUN put on last Saturday night at The Troubadour, you can witness the insane power that their music has on people by simply reading any online news outlet today, like US Weekly or MTV.com to find out how actor Shia LaBeouf was at the show, doing shots, dancing away and then left the show and crashed his car.

Here's what the news wire says...

Actor Shia LaBeouf was at the Troubadour club watching the Lemon Son band on Santa Monica Blvd in L.A. Saturday night before the crash that flipped his truck and resulted in the star needing extensive hand surgery, a source tells Usmagazine.com.

"He was dancing around and acting really crazy," the source tells Us. "He kept doing shots of whiskey.
"He stayed until the band was done and then stumbled out of the club by himself." A short time later, LaBeouf flipped his truck while making an illegal left turn. He suffered a serious hand injury, but neither his reported passenger, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" co-star Isabel Lucas, 23, nor the other driver were seriously injured in the crash.

NEW SOUNDS: BENJI HUGHES

Man, this guy is baddddassss!

He's probably known to many, but new to me > BENJI HUGHES, just look at this guy!! Wolfman Jack beware. Diablo, lookout....

From Charlotte, North Carolina, I just got some mp3's from his newly released double-album, "A Love Extreme" (New West Records), and song after song, I'm his new biggest fan. What's even better is heading out to LA to play two shows at EL CID in August, so it'll be up close and personal for me, stalker-style. Apparently he also wrote
the Captain Morgan's Rum "Got A Little Captain In Ya?" jingle.

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB
FROM: Bangor, Northern Ireland
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/twodoorcinemaclub

3 piece from Northern Ireland should get a lot of attention quickly, every song they sent our way is excellent, high-energy stuff. Sort of a mix between VAMPIRE WEEKEND and DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE.

MEAN TAMBOURINES
FROM: Nashville, TN
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/meantambourines

This is the kind of band that should get snapped up by a bigger label quickly, they have that sound that's built for wide-scale attention. Download "A Flight A Crash" (mp3)

FOUR DEAD IN OHIO
FROM: London
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/fourdeadinohioband

This one came via the always ahead of the curve ears over at Fandango Records, and it instantly grabbed us. They've already played with The Raveonettes, The Duke Spirit, Ladytron and The Black Angels..some heavy company indeed. Download track "Jesus Won't Dance In My High Heels"
it's blistering. (mp3)

THE RULING CLASS
FROM: London
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/therulingclassuk

BLACK SOUL STRANGERS
FROM: Dublin
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/blacksoulstrangers
Faction Records (Ireland)

I've been getting tons of great music from Ireland recently, and getting geared up for a trip over in September for the Hard Working Class Heroes Festival. This band came via Faction Records, the label in Dublin that has been on fire with a string of Irish hits that are pushing the British acts out of the charts in Ireland.

BUTCHER BIRDS
FROM: Queensland, Australia
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/butcherbirds
Merenoise Records (Australia)

Australian four-piece of females that drop the heavy rock, dark and thick! They've since replaced the man (drummer) in the picture above, now we'd like to get them to the States!

THE AMERICAN GYPSIES
FROM: Los Angeles, California MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/theamericangypsies

This band from LA is nasty, snot-nosed, straight up rock and roll. Very diverse from track to track, I need to see this one live as soon as I can.

THE RED LABELS
FROM: Dublin
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/theredlabelsire
Unsigned

Wow! Some crazy-ass guitar work in all their songs, THE RED LABELS are on my Dublin hit list for the Sept HWCH Festival indeed. Download "Playdoh" (mp3)

TODAY'S FUTURE SOUNDS RADIO SHOW CANCELLED

Sorry to say that today's FUTURE SOUNDS show isn't going to happen. The station has some work being done, so it's on autopilot today.

I'll be back next week and I'll be debuting FUTURE SOUNDS 32.

Monday, July 14, 2008

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: PRINCETON @ SILVERLAKE LOUNGE

If you're a fan of BELLE & SEBASTIAN or VOXTROT, you're gonna like the band from Eagle Rock, PRINCETON. They play tonight at the Silverlake Lounge as part of their July residency there and it's FREE.

The band's "Bloomsbury EP" is a fresh and easy listen, great summer tunes. Princeton is fronted by two identical twin brothers that definitely owe their sound to another set of brothers - DAVIES, and you can tell have spent time listening to plenty of THE LEFT BANKE and THE BUCKINGHAMS.

NEW SOUNDS: THE WEIGHT

This year has already brought us THE HEAVY, this time I'd like to turn you onto THE WEIGHT from Brooklyn. Coming in from the mysterious COLONEL RECORDS, the full-length, ''The Weight Are Men" has gotten many spins since it's arrival. To give you a hint at what it sounds like, think Brooklyn guys playing country music - a la BEACHWOOD SPARKS, you know the kind of guys that have spent many, many hours listening to 'Sweethearts Of The Rodeo', GRAM PARSONS' 'G.P. / Grievous Angel', and plenty of music by THE BAND. They could've found their band name directly from 'ol Rick, Garth and Levon in "The Weight", and I like to think that maybe they did based on the funky freedom and all over the place range of the songs on this album.

Tracks like "Had It Made", "Johnny's Song" and "Talkin'" are my early favorites, and each one shows off a different personality of the band's brand of country/americana rock.

THE AVETT BROTHERS SIGN TO COLUMBIA RECORDS

These days when I hear a band I love was signed by a major label I'm not sure whether or not to congratulate them or start the stopwatch. In this case, I'm betting on the big show, and I will send a mazel tov out to THE AVETT BROTHERS for their jump up to Columbia Records. Apparently the old Buddha, Rick Rubin, was moved by these kids' brilliance (didn't he also work with The Jayhawks?) and their amazing live show. Couldn't happen to a nicer crew of guys!

Labels: ,

TONIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO: LOVELIKEFIRE, LOQUAT - TILLY AND THE WALL

Our old and dear friends LOVELIKEFIRE and LOQUAT support TILLY & THE WALL tonight at the beautiful Great American Music Hall. Head out to the show, just don't get too wasted, you've got The Rumble tomorrow night, and then Lemon Sun on Friday at Bottom Of The Hill to get through with me....

STRICKEN CITY
FROM: London
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/strickencity

Everything I've heard from STRICKEN CITY thus far, I've liked. I'd really like to see them live, to find out if Rebekah Raa is truly the kind of frontwoman I think she is. Looks like they are giving their EP away for free as well. Track: "Tak O Tak"

BLACK GOLD
FROM: Brooklyn, NY
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/blackgoldrush
Red Bull Records

Don't roll your eyes at another 'Black' band, this one is BLACK GOLD. Don't confuse it with SUGAR & GOLD, or SAM SPARRO's 'Black & Gold', it's BLACK GOLD bitches, recognize. I had a tough time picking which track to play, it's all impressive. Track: "The Comedown"

HAPPY ANARCHY

ROBOTS IN DISGUISE
FROM: London
MYSPACE: http://www.myspace.com/robotsindisguise

This album, "We're In The Music Biz" caused a stir instantly thanks to an album cover where the ladies are naked and their cop outfits painted on (don't start looking closely you pervs). Part of England's 'The Mighty Boosh'-mania, these transformers are more than meets the eye. Track: "The Tears"

Sincerely Yours

Everyone's darlings, mine too! The UK's answer to THE AVALANCHES, but mixing in the beauty of BEACH HOUSE. History proves that I love my Swedes, and this EP, 'No Way Down', is brilliant. Track: "Collapsing At Your Doorstep"

LADYHAWKE
FROM: London via Australia

Modular Records

The track I dropped today, "Paris Is Burning", has a funky-ass wiggle to it. What makes it even finer is that Ms Ladyhawke is a fox. They have a lot of people talking about them in the UK, should wind up here before too much longer.

THE KING BLUES
From: London

Field Records UK

Oh yeah it's British, has the LIBERTINES- pub fighter sound all over it, and I'm ready to drink with them. Still trying to find out more info on these guys, but this London six-piece are political and want to take on George Bush. Track: "Let's Hang The Landlord"

Some old friends returning with new music:

DAVID VANDERVELDE - Track: "Someone Like You"
Perfect AM radio songs - what happened to the T. Rex??? Looks like someone moved to Nashville and fell into a soulful hole. Previously on FS27.

DIKTA - Track: "Just Getting Started"
Brand new demos sent my way from Iceland's answer to COLDPLAY. They are coming to LA next month for a week of dates to show off all this new material. Big vocals. Previously on FS26.

MYSTERY JETS - Track: "Two Doors Down"
Who isn't in love with this song about a guy in love with a girl that lives '2 doors down'? When we put them on FS19 forever ago, they seemed like a psychedelic band, a la THE CORAL, and now they're turning out hit songs.

BIRDMONSTER - Track: "Born To Be Your Man"
The mighty BIRDMONSTER are back! The San Francisco that blazed into everyone's blogconsciousnous a few years back have delivered the follow up - 'From The Mountain To The Sea' - and they're as catchy as they've ever been.
Previously on FS23.

THE TEMPER TRAP - Track: "Oooh Baby"
Melbourne, Australia's TTT sent over their latest album only this morning, right as I was leaving for Little Radio, and since then I've played this five times - WOW! There are some big songs on this release. Previously on FS26.
