FUTURE SOUNDS RADIO DEBUTS 11.30.09

Here is more information on artists that were debuts on this week's Future Sounds radio show on WOXY.....

THE BLACK RYDER
MYSPACE
HOMETOWN: Sydney, Australia
TRACK: Gone Without Feeling

Down under continues to bubble up the goods, time and time again, this time it's Sydney's THE BLACK RYDER. Dark, droney, this band has played with all the right BRMC type bands that have hit Australia, it needs to ride to North America. SXSW perhaps? The Anti-Machine Machine

CAPYBARA
MYSPACE
HOMETOWN: Kansas City, MO
TRACK: San Francisco, 1906

Definitely taking their cues from the SUFJAN STEVENS playbook, Kansas City's Capybara create a magical blend of indie rock that will tickle the DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE fan in all of us. The entire record, 'Try Brother', is extremely strong. The Record Machine

JAGUAR LOVE
MYSPACE
HOMETOWN: Portland, Oregon
TRACK: Started A Fire

You should know this duo from PDX, it's former BLOOD BROTHERS members creating a new blend of dance music. That should be enough street cred to get your attention, the music will take it from there. Fat Possum Records

LISTENING PARTY
MYSPACE
HOMETOWN: Shawnigan Lake, BC, Canada
TRACK: Kissing Booth

This came our way from a trusted source and all that we've heard from Listening Party's "South End Metropolis record is top flight. Interesting indeed, like an indie rock THIEVERY CORPORATION. Kill Devil Hills Records

BIG ROCK CANDY MOUNTAIN
MYSPACE
HOMETOWN: New Orleans, LA
TRACK: Lover

This young band sounds quite a bit like The Killers, with big choruses and high-end production, but they are a young troupe from Nola paying tribute to 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?". Unsigned

AM
MYSPACE
HOMETOWN: Los Angeles/Tulsa/New Orleans
TRACK: A Complete Unknown

This came via our friends at Filter, but it's a local flower we've been watching for some time and they've finally bloomed. AM is about to do the US tour supporting AIR, and that should get them on people's radar. Think BECK meets tropicalia and you are getting close. Filter Recordings

JET HORNS
MYSPACE
HOMETOWN: Gothenberg, Germany/Austin, Texas
TRACK: The Circle

Easily one of the most interesting artists we've come across in a bit, this Germany living in Austin sent us a complex set of music that is so diverse and unique that it'll take some time for us to even catch up to it. Unsigned

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: DEASTRO @ THE ECHO - INTERVIEW

Tonight at The Echo it's someone we've been a fan of since first catching the bug last year - DEASTRO. If you haven't heard them yet, think POSTAL SERVICE meets MAPS with a touch of SUFJAN. The Detroit based electronic leaning duo will be playing with MAX TUNDRA this evening and we had a chance to catch up with them before the show and ask some questions:

FS: You are rolling into LA for a show with MAX TUNDRA at The Echo in support of your album, 'Moondagger', how's the tour been so far? What was the high point so far?

DEASTRO: A O K ... THE _-_- hiGH pOinT so far for me has been playing in Montreal. The people we stayed with were great people. We stayed up talking about our cities and how great it was that the Canadian government invested so heavily in the arts. Me and Adam (the other guy in the band) were inspired by the difference it seems to make in their country.

FS: Deastro hails from Detroit, a city known as much for its raw power and garage as it is for it's techno and house. Is that where you pull your electronic vision for?

DEASTRO: I didn't really listen to music growing up other than Christian music. I started listening to music a lot when I was 19.

FS: We hear all these horror stories about the condition of the Motor City these days, but I also hear about all these artists moving to Detroit to rebuild it from a creative standpoint. Which is more accurate - desperation or creativity?

DEASTRO: I would say it is both, people are positive everywhere about rebuilding the city but it I am not saying there aren't times when people aren't desperate.

FS: I rarely ever ask an artist to let us in on the meaning of the lyrics to a song, but with 'Biophelia', it really begs this question. Can you elaborate?

DEASTRO: It is pretty personal I don't know if I should. We went through a really rough time in each others lives together.

FS: What's the story with "Tree Frog", it's so inspiring and uplifting, why was it a bonus track to the album?

DEASTRO: I wanted to cheer someone up. I put it on the album because we needed one for the label and I wanted people to hear the stuff I had always made.

FS: "Daniel Johnston Was Stabbed In The Heart With The Moondagger By The King Of Darkness And His Ghost Is Writing This Song As A Warning To All Of Us" - Long song title, but in it hides "Moondagger" - again, there seems to be a story waiting for this track and album theme? Do you mind sharing it with us?

DEASTRO: In that song I was just trying to use the absurd to make it easier to talk about some things that I am sad about and I wish I could just change.

FS: Future Sounds is forever in search of the next Deastro, bands and artists in every town in every state and country that are unknown today, can you tip us off about some bands that need a shout out or that everyone should know about?

DEASTRO: There is a band called redtom from MI, they have a song called when she's lonely that I really like. www.myspace.com/onewordredtom

FS: Thanks again for your time, we look forward to your set at The Echo.

8:30pm / $10 advance, $12 Day of Show / 18+

FUTURE SOUNDS RECORDS & ORIGAMI VINYL SET TO RELEASE LILOFEE 7" ON DEC 1ST

San Francisco based electro rock outfit, LILOFEE, are set to release a 7" with Echo Park's Origami Vinyl and Los Angeles based Future Sounds Records on December 1st. The 7" will feature the single, "Runaway" with a b-side, "In Flight".

Lead track, "Runaway" hums like Kim Wilde's "Kids In America" with a mix of Blondie's rapid-fire lyrics in "Rapture" that fits nicely next to contemporaries like Santogold or MIA. "In Flight" is a dreamy melancholy song of a girl who slowly turns into a bird and flies away, set to a musical backdrop of glitchy, radiating magic.

Two record release parties will take place around the launch of the "Runaway" vinyl, the first in San Francisco as Lilofee supports The Donnas at Slim's on December 9th and the second taking place in Los Angeles on December 16th at The Echo.

Lilofee's music is exactly like the dark German fairy tale it is named after, full of angst and love, dripping with affliction and laced with enchantment. Add to that a serious dance beat, a sprinkle of glitter and some remarkably catchy lyrics, and you have Lilofee.

The San Francisco duo, composed of Rob Easson and Kimi Recor, met through friends in 2007 and bonded over their mutual interest in dark pop, industrial music, and the Beatles. As Recor says, "the first time we played music together, we didn't leave the studio for 15 hours." The band has already shared the stage with Hercules & Love Affair, Sebastien Tellier, and opened for Deerhunter at this year's Noise Pop Music Festival in San Francisco.

As a live act, Lilofee transforms into a dynamic six piece, joined by drummer Dan Aquino, bassist Cyrus Etemad, guitarist Shea Roberts and keyboardist Chris Vick. Their collective musical experience comes through in their dramatic live performances and their dark, heavy sound has garnered comparison to bands such as Ladytron, Interpol and the Knife.

Lilofee's first full length - 'The Only Years' - will be released early in 2010.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: EL PERRO DEL MAR + OTHERS

The wonderfully enchanting voice and presence that is Sweden's EL PERRO DEL MAR closes up her North American tour with PETER, BJORN & JOHN tonight at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. We fell in love with her back on Future Sounds 24, but she continues to release gorgeous records that not enough people appreciate. Throw in the PARSON REDHEADS and HECUBA and you have yourself an amazing evening at the Hotel.

If that's not your bag, there is plenty to choose from this evening, as Spaceland have our friends DIOS playing on THE HAPPY HOLLOWS residency night that also includes buzzin' REAL ESTATE and ONE TRICK PONY. Free.

The show with the most steam is probably going on at Echo, where FANFARLO and FREELANCE WHALES perform. Both bands are like runaway trains right now in terms of upward mobility, so you have some decisions tonight.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT - THE RUMBLE: BROOKLYN @ SOUTHPAW

THE RUMBLE: BROOKLYN returns this Wednesday night to SOUTHPAW in Park Slope for another night of great music by bands on their way up. The party is brought to you by Future Sounds, DeFalco Presents, WOXY, Sound Fix Records and Stranded In Stereo.

Headlining is a band that should be on everyone's radar by now, BODY LANGUAGE, with their electronic finesse, having worked with folks like Passion Pit on their first recordings.

The ladies from Philadelphia, EAST HUNDRED, drop their BELLY-like rock on us (listen to "Plus Minus") as main support.

PEEPHOLE, a band we were just turned onto by Defalco's prying eye, are amazing, and are giving away their music on their web site. It's worth the download, we're big fans of "Club Agoraphobia" and their entire EP.

Opening up is a band we've been hearing rumblings about, it's time to see for ourselves, it's AERIEL EAST to complete November's four band line up.

Doors are at 8pm - Southpaw is located at 125 5th Avenue in Brooklyn

HOLLYWOOD BREWFEST THIS SATURDAY - UNLIMITED TASTINGS + LIVE MUSIC

This Saturday night in Hollywood, we're presenting a beer festival at the gorgeous MUSIC BOX @ FONDA where for the $45 ticket price, you can drink unlimited tastings of over 35 breweries while watching bands on two stages and dancing to DJ's on the rooftop.

You've been to some beer festivals, you know what I'm talking about, the kind where people have their hat backwards, in some field with white tents, and if they happen to have music playing, it isn't the kind you wanna hear. We're looking to flip that experience, deliver cool sounds that represent Los Angeles and beyond, while you taste amazing beers like MAGIC HAT or cask beers in the Blue Palms Brewhouse. FUTURE SOUNDS RADIO DEBUTS 11.09.09

We'll be highlighting all the bands playing this weekend's HOLLYWOOD BREWFEST later this week on the blog, so we'll reserve those bands appearing on the FS WOXY playlist for the first time for that feature. Here were the other new arrivals....

THE RENTALS
MYSPACE
HOMETOWN: Los Angeles
TRACK: Traces of Our Tears

Hardly a new band, but new to our FS radio show, THE RENTALS have been around since Matt Sharp put it together in the mid-90's. You will remember Sharp from his days as bassist for WEEZER, and their track "Friends Of P" back in the day. This is hardly an act living in the past, rather boldly creating a new release that includes a year long body of work called "Songs About Time" that's complete with daily and weekly photos, videos, new songs weekly, coffee table books, vinyl, and probably another 25 things I haven't mentioned. Bold indeed.

FENCES
MYSPACE
HOMETOWN: Seattle
TRACK: The Same Tattoos

FENCES is really about Chris Mansfield, a guy that manages to create perfect indie rock in a DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE kinda way. Originally from Boston, now in Seattle, everything we've heard from him is high quality. Unsigned

TONIGHT @ THE ARUBA - THE RUMBLE: LAS VEGAS RETURNS

Making another run at Sin City - THE RUMBLE: LAS VEGAS let's it ride at The Thunderbird Lounge at The Aruba for another FREE night of music. This month's party features 3 bands and a special guest DJ all brought to you by Future Sounds, Neon Reverb, Indigenous and WOXY.

Closing out their 6 city Rumble tour is the incredible APES OF WRATH. Watching them again and again, and their mid-afternoon performance at The Casbah in SD yesterday, it's easy to understand that this band has a huge future in front of them. They played songs off their newly finished full-length, 10 tracks of JONATHAN RICHMOND & THE MODERN LOVERS meets THE MUSLIMS/SP goodness. Just watching their drummer is a show within the show.

Las Vegas comes correct, and represent with THE SKOONERS, and band with gorgeous melodies at times while at other moments run off the rails. We've really enjoyed all that we've heard from this four piece and live they actually make indie kids dance.

Opening up are MINOR SUNS, an unsigned band from Vegas that create some gorgeous sounding indie rock that would find a nice home on Thrill Jockey or Barsuk.

The special guest DJ this month is DJ MIKEATTACK!

The party is FREE - The Thunderbird Lounge is inside The Aruba at 1215 S. Las Vegas Blvd

SATURDAY MATINEE SHOW - THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO @ THE CASBAH

The early bird gets the worm, or in this case, the Ape, as THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO returns to the Casbah this Saturday for a FREE matinee show with APES OF WRATH, AWOLNATION and THE OLD IN OUT, brought to you by Future Sounds, Indigenous, WOXY, Spin Earth, M Theory Records, SDdialed In, CityBeat and Trumer Pils.

If the APES OF WRATH continue their Rumble devastation tour in the fashion they've been going over the last few nights, playing their home turf tomorrow is going to be a spectacle. The trio sounds tighter than ever after four nights on the road, and I just received a copy of their full length and it's incredible.

Coming up from LA is the force that is AWOLNATION. You may recall frontman, Aaron Bruno from UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF GIANTS previously, this is his new project that is drawing big crowds in Los Angeles. High energy and with personality for a couple bands, not to be missed.

Opening up is the SD act, THE OLD IN OUT, and if you just go by the name, their going to bring the nasty. We had our local partners tell us how amazing they are live, so we've put together a line up of three acts that we know stand and deliver on stage.

Coming strong as guest DJ's this month are the dynamic duo of DJ RED OCTOBER and DJ C. WIZARD.

This is a FREE show and there will be beer specials provided by TRUMER PILS all afternoon long.

THE PARTY LASTS FROM 3PM-6PM
Come out early and start your Saturday night off right

Properly prepare yourself for THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES @ 3 Clubs this Thursday night, as it will be shoulder to shoulder in the back room for another amazing night of FREE music brought to you by Future Sounds, BMI, RM64, WOXY, Spin Earth, Stranded In Stereo and The Owl Magazine.

Headlining this week's party is the band formerly known as THE LIBRARY, now called PRAYER come in to top off the evening. Prayer recently turned out the Big Apple at CMJ and have just finished up five new songs with Alexi Aldi (PASSION PIT).

A late addition to the party, but a welcome one, are PARADE OF LIGHTS. This band is being discussed by a&r weasels everywhere and their live performances are gaining local groundswell.

First up will be a band YOU CAN'T MISS - San Diego's APES OF WRATH! Future Sounds Records dropped their next single, "Deathtrain" yesterday on you on iTunes, but you need to see this trio live and you'll be on board like we were. They've done all the Rumble dates this month, performing in Seattle, Portland and last night in San Francisco this week.

Our resident DJ's, S.i.S. will be turning heads and shakin' asses on the turntables in between the bands.

The party is FREE - 3 Clubs is located at 1123 Vine Street (cross S. Monica)
